Tandem To Tanzania

In the summer of 2026, my brother Sam and I will embark on a cycling journey from Brighton to Tanzania. Along the way, we will be stopping in Ethiopia and Tanzania to carry out individual community projects. Our route will take us across Europe, through Turkey, and then onward to Egypt as we begin our journey across Africa. (If the civil war in Sudan is unresolved we will fly from Istanbul to Addis Ababa for safety reasons)

Through our charity, Alala, we are committed to creating meaningful, sustainable change in the communities we partner with. On this expedition, we aim to complete two key projects:

 

Project 1 – Ethiopia

Estimated cost: $5,000

In Turmi, two vital boreholes have become non-functional. As a result, children and families are forced to dig for water in a riverbed that remains dry for most of the year. This has led to widespread illness and, in severe cases, loss of life. With your support, Alala pledges to repair and maintain these boreholes. The costs include transporting materials over 600 km from Addis Ababa, as well as labour and equipment, amounting to approximately $5,000.

Project 2 – Tanzania

Estimated cost: $30,000

Following the successful completion of our previous water projects for the Maasai community; we now hope with your help, to once again drill for water next to a school situated in Oremiti, not far from Moshi.

The people there have already tried digging a well themselves, but unfortunately the water found is too salty and therefore unfit for human consumption; leaving the villagers (inc. young children) without clean drinking water for their community.

With your donations, we aim to pay for a water surveyor to find a drinkable water source, as well as pay for drilling and the installation of a water pump.

If we are able to raise more than aimed, our dream would be to also help complete the rest of the structure of the school that is currently still in development due to lack of sufficient funds.
